Who: Supermodel Linda Evangelista, 55, and actor Kyle MacLachlan, 61.
How They Met: The pair met at a photoshoot in 1992 (which we’ll assume complied with Evangelista’s $10,000 “wake up” rate). At the time, Evangelista was married to the then-president of Elite Model Management in Europe, Gérald Marie. “I didn't know who Linda Evangelista was,” MacLachlan told The Guardian of his introduction to his future girlfriend. “I mean, I knew she was a model and I [fantasized] that maybe she looked like Helena Christiansen or something like that. So I met her there, and I was just, quite taken, you know — and I think it was true of her, too.” The shoot in question? Oh, I’m glad you asked. Evangelista and MacLachlan appeared in an ad for Barney’s New York. In one of the black-and-white shots, the two are standing side by side, Evangelista wearing a vintage hat and MacLachlan wearing a … Lobster. On his head. In the second image, MacLachlan is bent over, holding a parrot, as Evangelista brandishes what appears to be a sword. “Discipline can be amazing,” the tagline reads.
It was rumored that MacLachlan and Evangelista had gotten together that very night, but the actor clarified, “We didn't get together the first night. We actually got together the second night.” Evangelista and Marie finalized their divorce the following year.
Why We Loved Them: Though on paper the supermodel and the David Lynch muse weren’t the most conventional pairing, these two really seemed to be madly, rapturously in love — based on photo evidence alone. They were making out all over the city, and also in the pages of Vogue.
"God, we had a ball," MacLachlan told the Evening Standard of his time with Evangelista. "It was like a party. I got to submerge myself in the world of fashion. I became a bit of a clothes horse, actually. Linda opened up the world to me.”
He also gushed about the exciting years they spent together to The Guardian, telling the publication, “The traveling, and restaurants — there was certainly a lot of that, but there was also a lot of really great family hangin' out fun. That was one of the great things about Linda, she loved to have a good time with friends, and entertaining. That's where she's at her best — she loves having people around and a bunch of noise, and we shared that.”
Despite their shared affinity for parties and public make outs, Evangelista and MacLachlan kept their relationship relatively under-the-radar while they were still together. “I have a beautiful, beautiful, private home life,” the model told Evening Standard in 1997. They got engaged early in their relationship — and reportedly remained so for four years.
When They Peaked: I mean, it’s hard to outdo an introduction that involves crustacean headwear, but they did their best. Back in 1994, the Chicago Tribune wrote an article about Evangelista’s beloved natural skincare line, Chicet, which the outlet noted is “strictly word of mouth.” Evangelista’s in? Her “beau,” who was reportedly a fan of the brand’s Ideal Moisturizer. MacLachlan “got the lowdown” from fellow Lynch's favorite Laura Dern. They say love means never having to say you’re sorry, but I think a better definition would be “sharing your favorite laughably exclusive skincare products.”
The Breakup: In 1998 Evangelista and MacLachlan called off their engagement, the party line being that they “slowly grew apart.”
“We’ll always remain friends, and our families are still close,” Evangelista said of the split. “I still see Kyle regularly — as well as our two dogs. The bond will always be there.” Years later, MacLachlan opened up a bit about the breakup, telling The Guardian that while he was “quite happy just being with” Evangelista, “obviously she wanted more.”
“I wasn't necessarily resistant to marriage but it seemed like I was, and maybe I was, but I just liked things the way we were,” he went on. “She called it a day.”
MacLachlan explained the situation more concisely to the Evening Standard: "I didn't really want to get married as I couldn't see the point and the relationship wasn't really going anywhere.”
Where They Are Now:
The year following his split from Evangelista, MacLachlan met his current wife, Full Picture CEO and philanthropist Desiree Gruber. The couple wed in 2002 and welcomed son Callum in 2008.
Next up for MacLachlan is World War II drama series Atlantic Crossing, in which he’ll play former U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Evangelista continues to model to this day, and is known as one of the most famous supermodels in the world. She has a 13-year-old son, Augustin, whom she shares with Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault.
